Welcome to the Beginning

Starting something new is scary, isn’t it? The questions we ask ourselves when we are about to begin something new often serve to keep us stuck rather than move us forward. Those questions are usually gremlins running around in our heads trying to keep us safe.

The questions sound something like: What if I can’t do it? What if I look stupid? Why should I try when others are already doing it and doing it so much better? What if I don’t know enough? What if people think I am wrong to do this? What if others don’t like it?

Gremlin questions like these keep us in a place of fear so that we don’t experience imagined negative consequences. If we don’t jump into that new job search, if we don’t speak up more in meetings, if we don’t write that blog post, we don’t open ourselves to criticism. Gremlins, internal critical voices, and the like, are so scared of what might happen, they keep us from seeing all the possibilities of the good that could happen. They keep us from experiencing positive outcomes.

So what do we do about this? There are a number of ways to address the pesky gremlins, the internal negative dialogue. But for this very first blog post, this beginning, if you will, I want to share with you which technique I am using in this very moment.

I am feeling the fear and writing this post anyway. My gremlins hounded me with all those questions above and then some. But I am writing anyway. I worry about how this will turn out, what you, the reader, will think or feel. But I am writing anyway. I am starting this blog anyway.

Feel the fear. Acknowledge the worry. And ask a different question: What if someone likes it? What if it helps just one person? And that’s what I want this website to do: Help. My goal to connect, to help has become greater than my worry or my fear.

What about you? What do you want so much that the pursuit of it, the attaining it is starting to outweigh the fear?

I figured out ways that help me, and I’ve been lucky enough to share those with people who’ve found their way through fear and to new beginnings. If you are ready to discover how to move through your fear and quiet your gremlins, call me, email me, or sign up to get nuggets of coaching via email.

I can’t wait to connect with you!
